Creating the Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Image on CD-ROM on PC40.

This note describes the procedure to create a CD-ROM with an image of PC40s Windows NT Workstation 4.0 setup.

1. Create the Power Quest Drive Image Floppy Disks

Create a default Drive Image floppy set and adapt it to the CD-ROM that will be actually used for the image restoration procedure.

1.1 Create the Initial Boot and Program Floppies

First we create a two floppy set:

Boot in MS-DOS mode
insert the Power Quest Drive Image CD in the CD-ROM drive
run C:\>d:\os2dos\makedisk a:

This creates two floppies:

MS-DOS Drive Image Boot floppy
Drive Image Program floppy (pqdi.*)

1.2 Adapt Boot Floppy for CD-ROM Drive

Now adapt the boot floppy to support the actual CD-ROM drive for the Restore procedure.
For PC39/PC40 I did the following.

C:\>xcopy a:\aoatapi.sys c:\tmp\ (floppy with CD-ROM driver PC39/PC40)
C:\>xcopy c:\tmp\aoatapi.sys a:\cdrom\
added to config.sys: device=a:\cdrom\aoatapi.sys /D:MSCD000
added to autoexec.bat: CDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000

Note: lateron I put MS-DOS 6.22 and MSCDEX on the boot floppy instead of Caldera Open DOS 7 and CDEX. Furthermore I created a boot menu to provide for different CD-ROM drivers, to be able to use a single boot floppy.

2. Create the Disk Image File

Before we create the image file, we prepare a 1.5 GByte FAT partition as drive D: on PC40. We do this as local Administrator with the Disk Tool.

Now create the image file on the FAT partition. It shows up as drive C:.

boot PC40 from A: with the Drive Image Boot disk
replace the Drive Image Boot disk with the Drive Image Program disk
run: A:\>pqdi
press the Create Image button
Select Source Partition(s)

check the box with the NTFS partition (Programs),
press Next

Name Image File

Image File: c:\pc40wnt4.pqi
Image File Comments:

Windows NT Workstation 4.0 setup for domain Biophysics.

press Next

Compress Image File

select High (50%),
press Next

Ready to Create Image File

press the Advanced Options button

check box: Split Image File Into Multiple Files
File Size (bytes): 650,000,000
press OK

press Finish

Now a screen appears showing the progress of the image file creation process.

Through compression the 1.3GByte NTFS partition produced an image file using only 488MByte!

Note: While creating the first image file, the program complained about some incorrect index?, but was able to proceed after pressing Ignore. At restore the same message reappeared twice, but restoration seems successful.

3. Create the CD-ROM

Connect the external HP CD-writer plus 7200 series to the parallel port.

Install CD-Writer driver

run A:\engepatc.exe

First time (pc39):

The image file pc39wnt4.pqi, on drive C: - drive D: while running Windows NT - was transfered to indy:/export/pcnfs/cd-image using Winsock FTP.

Then Rene transfered it to his PC (rulhmpc28) using Solstice FTP. He created the CD on the external HP CD-writer plus 7200 series, with the Adaptec Easy CD Creator program.
