0. Introduction

This document describes the procedure as followed for the installation of Windows-NT Workstation 4.0 on PC40 (pc40.biophys.LeidenUniv.nl).

0.1 Security

You can think of binding Windows shaing sevices to NetBEUI protocol only, rather than NetBIOS-over-TCP/IP. This is saver since the NetBEUI protocolcannot pass out onto or in from a TCP/IP network. For now the sharing services are bound to TCP/IP (WINS Client (TCP/IP))


1. Hardware

1.0 Introduction

Install the network interface card and perform the necessary Unix administration on the indy workstation for file based databases (ethers, hosts, hosts.equiv), NIS and DNS.
 
1.1 Network Adapter

Install the 3COM 3C905B-TX (Fast Etherlink XL PCI 10/100Base TX) network interface card.

2.0 Introduction

This chapter describes the installation and configuration of the Windows-NT Workstation operating system. This includes OS patches (SP4, knownDLLs), NFS, video, mouse, printers, licenses and regional settings.

2.1 Windows-NT Workstation 4.0

2.1.1 Install Windows-NT Workstation 4.0

  1. Gathering information about your computer
  2. Installing Windows NT Networking
  3. Finishing Setup
Double click My Computer. Close the My Computer folder.

2.1.2 Set Windows-NT folder properties

Security enhancements are made after the installation.

2.1.3 Configure Windows-NT Workstation 4.0.

2.1.4 Create user disk

Use Disk Administrator to partition and format drive D: as logical drive on extended partition with NTFS file system, labeled People.

Set permissions on D: drive

Create folder people with the following properties: 2.2 Solstice Network Client 3.1+

Install Solstice Network Client 3.1+ from MN Proto CD-ROM:/Snc3.1pl:

Logon as Administrator, Solstice NFS Client Logon as moene.

Open control panel: Start |Settings | Control Panel

2.7.1 Regional Settings

Open Reginal Settings.

2.7.2 Printers

Open Printers from Control Panel (or Start| Printers)

Log out, logon as Administrator on domain Biophysics.

3. Applications

3.0 Introduction

Install applications using default directories, default program group. In some cases the program group has to be moved from Administrator to All Users. For some applications and the MS Office 97 suite, a program group has to be created.

3.1 Netscape 4.5

Install program.

Set permissions on C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Users Install Chimes plugin. 3.2 Microsoft Office 97 Install Language Packs for Dutch and German. Install Office Service Release 2 3.3 Corel Suite 8 3.4 CorelDRAW 8 Reboot computer to update.

4.0 Introduction

Install tools using default directories, default program group. In some cases the program
group has to be moved from Administrator to All Users. For some tools, a program group has to be created.

5. Set Permissions on Programs

Security enhancements are made after the installation.

6. System Policy

System policy is obtained from server PDC.


7. User Accounts

7.0 Introduction

No local user accounts on PC40 created for now.


8. Desktop

The Start menu for All Users is made by the Administrator. Then switch to account moene and create the Desktop as required for the Default User. This user profile is then used for the Default User profile entry.

8.1 Start Menu

Move all administrative tools (Diamond, Logitech) to \Winnt | Profiles | Administrator | Start Menu | Programs folder.

Move Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 from \Winnt | Profiles | All Users | Start Menu to \Winnt | Profiles | All Users | Start Menu | Programs folder.

Move contents of \Winnt | Profiles | All Users | Start Menu | Startup to \Winnt | Profiles | Default User | Start Menu | Startup (Office startup).

Remove \Winnt | Profiles | All Users | Start Menu | Microsoft Reference folder.

Create Microsoft Office 97 folder in \Winnt | Profiles | All Users | Start Menu | Programs folder. Move Microsoft Access, Binder, Excel, Photo Editor, Powerpoint and Word in to it.

Create the following folders in \Winnt | Profiles | All Users | Start Menu | Programs

Remove from All Users Startup: Remove all non-folders from Programs folder (Administrator, All Users, Default User), except Command Prompt and Windows NT Explorer.

Create an Xterm on indy.

Create an Xdm connection on indy. Specify startup directory for shortcuts. E.g. for MatLab this enables the possibility to run user dependend commands at startup (startup.m)

All Users| Start Menu| Handy All Users | Start Menu | Programs Set Security Properties of \Winnt | Profiles | All Users | Start Menu | Microcal Origin, Real, Reference Manager,  to : Run CorelDRAW 8 to create application environment.
Run CorelDREAM to create application  environment.

Run CorelDRAW 8 | Productivity Tools | Bitstream Navigator to create directory C:\Corel\Graphic\Fontnav\Data_NT.

Note: running Ghostview will create a menu entry in the users Program folder.

8.2 Desktop for Default User

Now configure the Desktop for the Default User Profile. Logon as moene and prepare the required Desktop configuration.

Create shortcut from \Winnt | Profiles | Administrator | SendTo | Netscape Messenger into
\Winnt | Profiles | moene | SendTo | Netscape Messenger.

8.5 Map \\indy\people directory once

In Windows Explorer map network drive H: to \\indy\people via Solstice_NFS_Client | NFS Servers | indy | people. And unmap it again. Otherwise mounting of homedirectories at logon will fail.

8.6 Default User

9. Remaining Administration

Perform the following administation as Administrator.

9.1 Auditing on Printers

Add auditing to the Laser Printer and the Color Printer.

9.2 Administrator Password

Replace the temporary password for the Administrator account with the the final password.
